FAQ

1. Why is the kick-off event Friday night instead of Saturday morning?  What is it going to consist of?

We want to make sure that when we go out to serve with people we may not know on Saturday, a sense of community has already been developed among the volunteers.  When you show up on Saturday, we want everyone to see a friendly face, even if they signed up not knowing anybody else that was serving.   The kick-off event will be family-friendly and will foster and environment for worship of God through music and conversation and fellowship with each other over desserts!

2. What do you mean times vary between 9am and 3pm?

We want to serve our sites as best as we can.  Sometimes, sites have a project that may not need volunteers all day but we have a desire to partner with them long-term so we try our best to meet their needs by being flexible with our time.

3. Are we having a wrap-up event?

We were originally scheduled to but due to many different factors, have decided to hold off on a wrap-up event this year.  We do, however, encourage all teams to gather after their jobs are finished to debrief and get together on their own for dinner!

4. What kind of sites are we serving?

We are serving an exciting mix of Christian ministries like By the Hand Club for Kids and Lydia Home as well as Chicago wards that cover almost every neighborhood our volunteers live in.  For a list of all the sites and links, if available, check out the “Service Sites” page within this website.

5. Why are there no sites in the suburbs?

For One Chicago’s vision is to see the city of Chicago renewed because it is where we worship, work and live.  We believe it’s important to serve in the neighborhoods we do life in and this also allows volunteers to create a longer lasting relationship between themselves and the sites they may want to go back to serve at.

6. If I register but find out later on that I cannot serve that day, do I need to tell anyone?

It is important to notify us if you register but find out that you cannot serve on October 4th.  The service sites have communicated their needs to us, which includes how many volunteers they need to complete the project.  In turn, we make commitments to them that we must honor in order to serve them as best we can.  If you find out that you cannot make it, please email info@foronechicago.org as soon as possible.  We ask that you do not ask someone else to go in your place without letting us know as there may be aspects or changes in regards to a project you may not be aware of.

7. How do I serve with my friends or small group?  Can I sign other people up for them?

By registering at www.foronechicago.org, you will be able to see how many spots are left for each service site.  We do encourage you to invite your family, friends and co-workers to serve with you but each person will have to sign up individually – just make sure you register quickly as volunteer spaces are first come, first serve.

8. If I cannot serve this day but would like to help out in another way, what can I do?

There are many things leading up to the day that still needs to be done from recruiting volunteers, to set up to securing sponsorships.  If you are interested in serving in any of these capacities, please email Laura Ng at laura@foronechicago.org.

9. Will rides be provided?

Your site leader will be in touch with you to find out who can drive and who does not.  It will be their responsibility to ensure that you do make it to your site that day.

10. Will lunch be provided?

Yes.  Your Site Leader(s) will be bringing lunch to your service site Saturday morning (thank your Site Leaders – they will be responsible for a lot!!).

11.  Will babysitting be provided?

Babysitting will be provided on October 4th from 8am to 4pm.  When you register, please be sure to include how many kids will need babysitting and their ages.

12. I have an idea for a site or project; can we add it to the list of service sites this year?

We would be excited to hear your idea!!  Unfortunately, no additional sites will be added to For One Chicago 2008.  However, email your idea to info@foronechicago.org and we’ll be sure to get in touch with you!
